The existing library situated in the ground floor and the basement of the central building of the University was becoming obsolete. It lacked the needed space to house the ever-growing collections and any other facilities that could promote its interactiveness with the University, it lacked the the facilities that could house the equipment for restoration and conservation of precious documents, and lacked also the potential to transform the library into a platform for research.

We were commissioned to create a complete restructuring program and an architectural development project in order to position the USEK Library at the forefront of University libraries in the region. The concept establishes an organic relationship with the campus, involving both the spatial and functional levels. The existing spaces were short of an identification core, the University being also a Monastery built without a cloister (its Identitarian space). In this optic, a cloister was added to the existing building in order to serve as an access and an extension to the Library, putting it at the heart of the campus, irradiating its spaces in a network of functions where research was needed as a support for academics. Specialized rooms concerning restoration, conservation, and didactic issues include the latest technologies in the field.
